UNGA President calls for immediate and unconditional ceasefire in all conflicts

NEW YORK: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Philémon Yang Tuesday called for immediate and unconditional ceasefire in all conflicts worldwide, including in the war-torn Gaza Strip. Speaking in the general debate of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Yang called for ceasefires in all conflicts and urged all parties involved to adhere to international law. Pointing out the situation in Gaza as a critical example, he reiterated that 'only a two-state solution can end the cycle of violence and instability,' which he believes would bring peace, security, and stability to all. He noted that progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been significantly delayed, while the climate crisis is no longer a distant threat, as it damages entire livelihoods and communities. He stressed that the lack of confidence further complicates the prospects for peaceful settlement of conflicts while reiterating that it was not the time to invest in t his and enter into a dialogue on sustainable dignity and peace. Stressing the need for the international community to unite in the pursuit of peace, Yang called for resources to be diverted away from military build-ups and arms races and noted the urgent need to renew the global financial architecture, alongside addressing the growing digital divide.
