S. Korea: N. Korea Blows Up Parts of Inter-Korean Roads

North Korea on Tuesday blew up roads connected to South Korea, after Pyongyang warned it would take steps to completely cut off its territory from the South. "The North Korean military conducted detonations, assumed to be aimed at cutting off the Gyeongui and Donghae roads, at around noon and is carrying out additional activities using heavy equipment," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement cited by Yonhap News Agency. The JCS said it has bolstered its surveillance and readiness posture. Last week, the North's military announced a plan to "completely separate" North Korea's territory from South Korea, saying it had informed the US military of the move to "prevent any misjudgment and accidental conflict." The Koreas are connected by roads and railways along the Gyeongui Line, which connects the South's western border city of Paju to the North's Kaesong, and the Donghae Line along the east coast. North Korea had earlier announced that its military units deployed along the border with its southern neighbor were on high alert to fire, after it said that Seoul had sent drones carrying hostile propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang three times during the current month of October.
