Lithuanian outgoing President Gitanas Nauseda will face his Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte in the second round of the presidential elections on May 26. After counting the votes cast Sunday in the first round, Nauseda was ahead by a large margin with 46% of the votes, while Simonyte had 16%. Nauseda and Simonyte ran against each other in the previous presidential elections five years ago. Lithuania is one of the Baltic states, with a population of three million people. It was a Soviet republic until its independence in 1991. Since 2004, it has been a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), like the other Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia. Source: Qatar News Agency
