Kuwait Fire Force urges following guidelines to prevent fires

Interview by Abdullah Al-Mesri KUWAIT, The Kuwaiti Fire Force (KFF) on Thursday called on citizens and residents to follow the safety guidelines and instructions in a bid to prevent fires, said a senior KFF official. In his interview with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), KFF Director Brig. Mohammad Al-Ghareeb asserted that everyone must possess fire prevention equipment and must know how to use them, including fire blankets, smoke and gas detectors, and fire extinguishers. He also emphasized the importance of teaching security personnel, tenants, and everyone living in residential and commercial buildings how to use such tools in order to prevent and deals with emergencies. Al-Ghareeb cited many causes of fires in residential buildings, with electricity being the most prominent, explaining that overloading electrical circuits often lead to electrical faults. He also pointed to the need to shut off unnecessary devices and gadgets, especially when leaving the building, so as to reduce energy consumption and preve nt electrical faults that might lead to fire. He added that gas stoves are also hazardous, and it is crucial to maintain them and ensure all gas cylinders are safe and not leaking, underscoring that turning off the gas lever when not in use significantly contributes to stove safety. Vehicle owners must ensure regular car maintenance, including oil and water changes, and avoid leaving flammable materials in the car, especially during peak heat times in the afternoon, Al-Ghareeb warned. Another main cause of fires is children playing with hazardous electrical plugs, he said, emphasizing the necessity of carefully having an eye on children as they are playing in a bid to avoid emergencies and ensure their safety. Regarding general safety, Al-Ghareeb advised private swimming pool owners to install handrails and anti-slip tiles in and around the pools and ensure an adult is always present when children are swimming to avoid incidents. Shifting his focus to elevators, Al-Ghareeb stated that nowadays, elevators are found in most residential buildings and almost all other buildings. He asserted that following safety guidelines and instructions is mandatory for all users and owners. He stressed that when installing a new elevator, it is imperative to ensure the company is certified by the Kuwait Fire Force (KFF), conduct periodic maintenance, and install a backup battery in case of power outage. The KFF's instructions in the event of power outage while someone is inside an elevator are to remain calm, not attempt to open the doors to exit, press the emergency button, and dial 112 emergency hotline to request help. On another note, Al-Ghareeb advised seagoers, both swimmers and fishermen, to be cautious of flammable materials in boats, swim in designated and safe areas, check the weather before sailing, carry safety equipment at all times, and notify friends and family of departure and arrival times.
