Japan has decided to extend the deployment of its military personnel to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for another year. The decision was made at a Cabinet meeting on Friday to extend the term of the deployment, which was set to expire at the end of the month. Following the meeting, Defense Minister Kihara Minoru told reporters that it is important for Japan to continue to send personnel to help peace efforts by the United Nations. He added that Japan will contribute to peace and stability in South Sudan. Japan has been committed to dispatching self-defense forces to the UNMISS headquarters in South Sudan to maintain security and upgrade the infrastructure since South Sudan cession in 2011, along with high-ranking officers to establish training programs for the personnel of other countries.
