Gaza City: The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany has announced a financial commitment of £6 million to support the UN2720 Mechanism for Gaza, aimed at expediting the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. This initiative aligns with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023), which advocates for an operational framework under the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza (SHRC) to address immediate humanitarian needs. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the allocated funds will be directed towards several key initiatives designed to enhance the aid delivery infrastructure in Gaza. These include essential logistics support, such as procuring trucks to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid by UN organizations within Gaza, and from Jordan through the Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization (JHCO). Additionally, the funding will cover essential operating costs to ensure efficiency along the Jordan corridor, including fuel provisions , as well as the establishment of truck holding areas at Allenby Bridge and Al Ghabawi to expedite the provision of supplies. Ms. Karuna Herrmann, UNOPS Director in Jerusalem, expressed gratitude for Germany's significant contribution, emphasizing its impact on enhancing the operational capacity and effectiveness of the UN2720 Mechanism during a critical time. Ulrike Borrmann, Deputy Head of the German Representative Office to the Palestinian Territories, highlighted the unprecedented humanitarian needs in Gaza and reiterated Germany's commitment to partnering with UNOPS to facilitate the safe distribution of essential goods to the Palestinian people in Northern Gaza and beyond. This financial support comes at a crucial moment as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates, with the needs of the population becoming increasingly urgent. The collaboration between Germany and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) illustrates a coordinated international effort to strengthen humanitarian response mechan isms. A key aspect of this partnership is the enhancement of the Jordanian corridor, which is vital for delivering essential aid to Gaza amid ongoing challenges.
