Egypt, Russia arrange for BRICS accession

CAIRO, – Egypt and Russia discussed on Tuesday arrangements of Egypt joining the BRICS economic group starting January 1, 2024 coinciding with the bloc’s presidency transitioning from South Africa to Russia.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry mentioned in a statement that Assistant Foreign Minister for multilateral international and regional affairs, Raji Al-Atrabi, discussed the preparations with Russian deputy Foreign Minister and President’s representative to the bloc, Sergei Ryabkov.

Rybakov relayed Russia’s support to Egypt’s accession while also taking note of its regional and international influence, and its vast expertise in various fields.

He spoke of the positive contributions Egypt could bring the bloc’s to joint work, affirming that as chair, Russia will work on easing joining procedures.

The Egyptian diplomat communicated his appreciation for Russian support and coordination, and affirmed Egypt’s intent on being an active member.

This contributes to comprehensive economic development efforts in Egypt, he stated, adding that they are aspiring to reinforce role of developing nations in the international front.

BRICS last summit in August had decided upon conclusion to invite six nations: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Argentina, Iran and Ethiopia, to join the group.

Currently the bloc includes five of the fastest growing economies in the world; Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, comprising about 23 percent of world’s GDP and more than 16 percent of global trade.
