An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Badakhshan Province, northeastern Afghanistan. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 28 km from Ishkashim in the region, at a depth of 224.3 km.
