Child Returns with Burned Legs After Being Abducted in Gaza by Israeli Forces Alongside Father

Gaza strip: On the morning of March 19, Palestinian citizen Osama Abu Nassar carried his one-and-a-half-year-old child, Jawad, and headed east of his home located in Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. At that moment, Israeli occupation forces opened fire toward him, while an Israeli quadcopter drone hovered overhead, ordering him via loudspeaker to place his child on the ground and continue walking toward a group of Israeli occupation troops, according to his wife, Waad Al-Shafie.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Waad recounted hearing gunfire after which the soldiers took both her husband and child. About 12 hours later, the family was informed by the International Committee of the Red Cross to come and receive the child. Waad, along with the grandfather Mohammad, retrieved Jawad from the Committee's representatives at the Al-Maghazi camp market around 10:00 p.m. Jawad appeared frail and was wrapped in a medical disposable drape sheet, concealing the extent of his injuries.

Upon returning home, Waad discovered blood-stained pants and three circular wounds on Jawad's legs. The injuries included an entry-and-exit wound on the left leg and a burn mark on the right leg, likely from a cigarette.

The child was rushed to Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, where medical examinations revealed no fractures. Mohammad Abu Nassar, the child's grandfather, confirmed to WAFA that Jawad received immediate medical care.

The 19-year-old mother, Waad, expressed her concern over her husband's severe psychological stress, which she believes might have contributed to his perilous actions. Osama, 25, is unemployed and lives with his family near the 'yellow line,' a boundary established under the October 11, 2025 ceasefire agreement to separate Israeli forces from residential areas in Gaza.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued their aggression, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. According to local sources, Israeli forces have killed 687 Palestinians and injured 1,845 others in Gaza since the ceasefire. The Abu Nassar family lives in constant danger from gunfire by Israeli military vehicles and drones.

In their modest home, Waad tends to Jawad amid the sounds of gunfire, expressing deep concern for her detained husband's safety. The family was informed by a Red Cross representative that Osama is injured and held by Israeli forces, with no details on his condition.

Mohammad Abu Nassar voiced fears over his son's detention, highlighting the torture and medical neglect faced by detainees in Israeli prisons. Reports indicate that around 70 detainees have died in custody since the conflict began, either from torture or neglect.

Since the onset of the war, approximately 7,000 people from Gaza have been detained by Israeli forces. Reports reveal that Israeli occupation forces have killed 72,263 citizens in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, with children suffering significantly, as over 20,000 have been killed, including 1,000 under the age of one.
