NEW YORK: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Tuesday called the situation in the occupied West Bank and the war-torn Gaza Strip one of the greatest humanitarian crises. 'In Gaza and the West Bank, we are witnessing one of the greatest humanitarian crises in recent history, which is now spreading dangerously to Lebanon,' President da Silva stated at the 79th session of UN General Assembly in New York. He noted that this crisis has become 'a collective punishment of the entire Palestinian people.' Referring to the ongoing Israeli genocidal war on the Strip, which has killed at least 41,467 Palestinians and injured over 95,921 others, la Silva said: 'There have been over 40,000 victims, mostly women and children'. Slamming the misrepresentation of the situation in the Strip as Israel's right to self-defense, he said: 'The right to defense has become the right to vengeance, which postpones ceasefire.' He called for a review of the UN Charter to revive the UNGA's role in promoting peace and reformi ng the multilateral institution. Source: Palestine news & Information Agency - WAFA
