The Arab League Monday condemned Israeli "crimes against humanity" in the Gaza Strip, which have continued since October. "What is happening in Gaza is a flagrant violation of international conventions and norms, with the failure of the international community to stop the brutal Israeli aggression against civilians, relief workers and medical teams performing their humanitarian duty," the pan-Arab organization said in a statement marking International Humanitarian Day on August 19. It condemned Israel's, the occupying power, ongoing policy of starvation against civilians, prevention of humanitarian aid, restriction of aid delivery and the targeting of ambulances, hospitals and medical centers that suffer from a severe shortage of medical staff, medicines and supplies. Arab league Assistant Secretary-General Haifa Abu Ghazaleh stressed the need to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), commending the agency's role in Gaza despite Israeli pressures and attempts to obstruct its work.
