World Council of Churches Urges Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid in Middle East.

Gaza: The World Council of Churches (WCC) executive committee has issued a statement expressing profound concern over the ongoing Israeli military actions impacting civilian populations and infrastructure in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, with repercussions extending into neighboring Syria. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the WCC statement highlighted the severe human toll these military operations have exacted, resulting in the deaths of over 50,000 civilians, including vulnerable groups such as children, humanitarian workers, medical personnel, and journalists. Additionally, tens of thousands more have been severely injured and traumatized as a result of the conflict. The statement from the WCC governing body expressed deep sorrow over the continuous attacks on healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and ambulances in Gaza and Lebanon, which have critically undermined essential healthcare services. The destruction of medical infrastructure, coupled with the denia l of humanitarian access and obstruction of aid, was emphasized as a violation of both international law and the sanctity of life. The WCC underscored the dire situation in northern Gaza, where an estimated 400,000 people remain trapped under siege, lacking access to fundamental necessities such as food, water, fuel, and medical care, in stark contravention of international humanitarian law and human dignity. The statement also noted a significant worsening of acute food insecurity in the region. In response to the escalating crisis, the WCC has called for an immediate ceasefire across Gaza, Lebanon, and the broader region to halt further loss of life and livelihoods. The organization urged the restoration of compliance with international law and demanded the removal of barriers to humanitarian access, advocating for the unconditional provision of aid to individuals trapped in conflict zones. Furthermore, the WCC has called for an arms embargo on Israel to prevent further escalation of violence and to ensu re the protection of civilians in the affected areas.
