Baghdad, The World Health Organization announced today, Tuesday, that at least 40 athletes participating in the Olympic Games have been infected with Covid-19. Director of Epidemic Preparedness and Prevention at the organization, Maria Van Kerkhove, said during a press conference in Geneva: "It is not surprising that athletes are infected because the virus is spreading very quickly in other countries." She added that "many countries have witnessed a widespread outbreak of Covid-19 in recent months," stressing that "the Olympic Games Committee has taken the necessary measures to confront these challenges, in cooperation with the World Health Organization." Van Kerkhove indicated that "the virus is still spreading widely around the world," adding that "data collected by the World Health Organization from 84 countries showed an increase in the percentage of positive tests in recent weeks."
