UNRWA Warns of Imminent Famine in Gaza Strip Amid Prolonged Conflict

GAZA CITY: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has issued a dire warning about the escalating threat of famine in the Gaza Strip, where residents are experiencing severe food insecurity and a critical lack of humanitarian aid due to an ongoing Israeli military campaign that has persisted for over 14 months. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, UNRWA communicated through a series of posts on its X account that, although its teams are making efforts to deliver aid to those in need, these efforts are falling far short of what is necessary. The agency highlighted the severe food insecurity faced by the residents of Gaza and called for urgent international cooperation and a ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of life-saving aid as the threat of famine looms. The situation has deteriorated further across most areas of the Gaza Strip, particularly in the northern governorate, which has been heavily affected by the ongoing Israeli blockade. The blockade h as exacerbated conditions of genocide and starvation, aimed at forcing residents to migrate southward. Recent developments on October 5 saw the Israeli occupation army reinvade the northern Gaza Strip, with reports suggesting Israel's intention to establish a buffer zone by displacing residents through continuous bombardment and restrictions on essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine.
