The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is set to vote on a new draft resolution on Friday that would recognize Palestine as eligible for full membership in the United Nations system like the rest of the countries of the world. The adoption of the resolution from the UNGA is based on a request submitted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to reconsider the full membership for Palestine and issue a positive recommendation accordingly. Palestine so far submitted a request to the UNSC to reconsider granting it the full membership in the United Nations, but the United States of America vetoed this endeavor. According to the United Nations Charter, a country is accepted as a member of the UN by a decision issued by the UNGA by a two-thirds majority, but only after a positive recommendation by 9 members of the Security Council, out of 15 members, on condition that none of the five permanent members (Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America) should vote against the request.
