The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Jordan concluded its "Scaling Up Innovation in Water Management for Climate Security in Northern Jordan" project on Wednesday, with a ceremony organized in partnership with the Royal Scientific Society. Nidal Oran, UNDP's Director of the Environment and Livelihoods Program, highlighted that the project had introduced pioneering water security initiatives in the Mafraq and Jerash governorates and the Jordan Valley. The project aimed to collaborate with small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurs to advance innovation in the water sector. Oran said the project provided essential resources to enhance the local market environment and develop innovative solutions for climate, water, and food security. Funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the project involved multiple stakeholders, including the Arab League, UNDP, the World Food Program, the United Nations Environment Program Financing Initiative, the UN Disaster Reduction Program , the UN Human Settlements Program, and the Arab Water Council. Their collective goal was to improve climate security across Arab nations. Oran also noted that the UNDP is implementing a $25 million project funded by the Green Climate Fund in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization. This project aims to build climate resilience in Jordan and enhance water management systems to address climate change and support the green economy. Walid Shahin, Assistant to the President of the Royal Scientific Society, emphasized that the project aligns with the society's vision of positively impacting local communities and addressing their challenges. He stressed the importance of fostering entrepreneurship to create sustainable job opportunities and tackle poverty and unemployment. Khaled Abu Hamour, Director of the National Center for Agricultural Research, underscored the center's role in advancing food and water security amid climate challenges in northern Jordan and the importance of partnerships in the success of such initiatives.
