UN Security Council Votes on Gaza Ceasefire Resolution Amid Worsening Famine

Gaza: The UN Security Council voted on Thursday on a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged and devastated enclave. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, elected members launched discussions on the draft resolution at the end of August in response to the UN's official declaration of famine in the Gaza Strip. The resolution calls for an end to restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid and demands an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, alongside the immediate and unconditional release of detainees. In August, UN partner experts confirmed the occurrence of famine in part of the Strip, while a UN commission accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza. In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupat ion has been committing genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 65,062 Palestinians, with nearly 165,697 reported injured, most of them children and women. The famine has claimed the lives of 432 people, including 146 children.
