New York: The UN Security Council on Wednesday held closed consultations on Resolution 1701 on Lebanon, with members hearing a briefing from the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. The council was also briefed by Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on the same resolution adopted by the council in 2006. Plasschaert said that Lebanon and the entire region "remain on the brink of grave danger," adding that a diplomatic solution to the crisis is still possible "as Lebanon and Israel declare that they are not seeking war." The UN official expressed hope that an agreement on Gaza would lead to an immediate return to a cessation of hostilities across the Blue Line. Source: Jordan News Agency
