UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that "nothing justifies the collective punishment" inflicted by Israel on the people of Gaza who are suffering in an unimaginable way. In press statements, Guterres sharply criticized the way the Hebrew state is managing its war in the devastated Palestinian Gaza Strip, which will enter its second year next month, saying: "It is unimaginable; the level of suffering in Gaza, the level of death and destruction is unparalleled in everything I have witnessed since I became Secretary-General." Describing the deaths, destruction, hunger and diseases in the besieged Gaza Strip, he pointed out that "the truth is that nothing justifies the collective punishment of the Palestinian people, and this is what we are witnessing dramatically in Gaza."
