The United Nations has appreciated the work efforts of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement in managing migration in accordance with the Global Compact for Migration. Deputy Special Representative and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Ishaqzai, said during the activities of the Migration Management Conference in Iraq, 'Dialogue on Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions,' which was organized by the Ministry of Migration and Displacement in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, today, Saturday in Baghdad, 'a few years ago, Iraq has faced major displacement crises and witnessed diverse migration, which created challenges and opportunities at the same time. He added, 'Since the launch of the Global Compact for Migration, the United Nations has been working closely with the Government of Iraq to support the implementation of the agreement, and one of the most prominent milestones was the launch of the national mechanism in Dece mber 2022, which indicates Iraq's commitment to the Global Compact for Migration, which enhances the state's cooperation in facilitating safe, orderly and regular migration, and dignified return, readmission and sustainable reintegration,' He said. 'Today's conference is an important platform to discuss the national cooperation necessary to prepare for the second conference of the Global Compact for Migration, which will be held in Cairo in the coming days. Thus, we have the opportunity to review the progress achieved, identify challenges, and explore opportunities to strengthen regular migration pathways and address irregular migration. The UN representative stressed, 'The partnership between the United Nations Network on Migration in Iraq, in coordination between the International Organization for Migration and the Government of Iraq through the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, included support at the level of the United Nations to strengthen migration management in line with the Global Compact on M igration and the Sustainable Development Goals,' praising the strategic role that Iraq plays in supporting the Global Compact on Migration alongside Egypt and Morocco, The successful completion of the second 'Governance Indicators for Migration' assessment in October 2023 and the policy pledges of the Global Compact for Migration in Iraq earlier this year reflect a strong commitment to migration governance reforms.
