New York: A United Nations official emphasized the pressing need for continued efforts to address the prolonged deprivation of basic human necessities in the Gaza Strip, which has persisted for over 15 months.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Sigrid Kaag, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, highlighted the dire situation faced by Palestinian civilians in Gaza during a briefing to the UN Security Council. She noted that despite the first phase of the ceasefire bringing some relief, much more needs to be done to alleviate the suffering and restore human dignity.
Kaag discussed the potential for peace and security in the Middle East, acknowledging the rapid changes in the region and urging swift action to achieve a two-State solution. She reported that since the ceasefire began on 19 January, there has been a significant increase in humanitarian assistance, thanks to improved access and security conditions.
Kaag also outlined a vision for Gaza's future, emphasizing the need for protection, recovery, and reconstruction. Initial estimates suggest that $53 billion is required for these efforts. She stressed the importance of ensuring that Gaza remains an integral part of a future Palestinian State and that there is no forced displacement.
In her address, Kaag made four key requests: ongoing support for the ceasefire deal, attention to the West Bank's volatile situation, backing for the Palestinian Authority's reform efforts, and financial aid for Gaza's reconstruction. She expressed concern about Israeli military operations in the West Bank and the impact on refugee camps and infrastructure, urging investigations into incidents involving civilian casualties.
Kaag also warned about the existential threat posed by Israeli settler-colonialism and legislative actions against UNRWA, underscoring the need for its essential work to continue unimpeded.
