NEW YORK: The United Nations today called for opening an investigation into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist, Ismail al-Ghoul, and cameraman, Rami al-Rifi, in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. During a press conference, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasized the need to provide journalists with protection, and the need for accountability. 'We, of course, condemn the killing of any and all journalists." Since the outbreak of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, more than 157 journalists have been killed, along with the destruction of 100 headquarters of media institutions, the detention of over 100 journalists, most of whom are still detained in occupation prisons, and the forced disappearance of four journalists without, whose whereabouts and fate remain unknown to this day, according to reports issued by the Palestinian Journalists Union.
