Turkey announces its withdrawal from the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty

Turkey announced on Friday its withdrawal from the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty, which it joined in 1992. The Official Gazette of Turkey published a presidential decree in which Turkey confirmed its withdrawal from the 'Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty.' The presidential decree stated, 'It was decided to halt the implementation of the Treaty between the Republic of Turkey and the other states party to the Treaty as of April 8, 2024, in accordance with Article 3 of Presidential Decree No. 9.' The treaty was concluded in the last years of the Cold War with the aim of placing comprehensive limits on major categories of conventional military equipment in Europe, and obligated the destruction of quantities of weapons in excess of the limits of the treaty.
