Three people were killed and 40 injured in a preliminary toll as Typhoon Shanshan made landfall on Japan's main island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan. The Typhoon disrupted air and train traffic and cut off power. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the typhoon, with winds of up to 198 kph, made landfall near the city of Satsumasendai on the southwestern island of Kyushu Thursday morning. The Agency urged residents in the affected areas to remain on high alert for natural disasters, while public transport operators canceled trains and flights, and some homes were left without power as the storm advanced. Kyushu Electric Power Co. said more than 250,000 homes in seven prefectures were without power. Typhoon Shanshan follows Typhoon Ampil, which disrupted hundreds of flights and trains this month, after Tropical Storm Maria. Typhoons in the region are forming closer to the coast, intensifying faster and lasting longer over land as a result of climate change, according to a study released last m onth.
