Baghdad The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Settlement, Tor Wennesland, announced the failure of the international community to help both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict find a political solution to the crisis in the region.
The UN Special Coordinator said: “After more than a century of conflict and more than half a century of occupation, the international community has failed to bring the parties to a just and sustainable political settlement.”
The UN Security Council failed to adopt a Brazilian draft resolution requiring a halt to Israeli orders to evacuate residents of the northern Gaza Strip to its south, and calling for a humanitarian truce and the establishment of safe corridors.
The US Permanent Mission to the Council resorted to using its veto power against the Brazilian draft resolution.
The Security Council also rejected two Russian amendments to the Brazilian draft resolution, one calling for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons and the other condemning indiscriminate attacks on the Gaza Strip./ End
