The National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Control announced the seizure of an imported mechanism contaminated with radioactivity in Umm Qasr port in Basra. The official of the Authority's branch in Basra, supervisor of the radiation inspection team at Basra ports, Karim Abed Rakhais, said: "The technical teams of the Authority, in cooperation with the company examining the radiation gates at the border ports, seized a Japanese-made Kawasaki shovel type mechanism at the gate of Yard 80 in Umm Qasr port." He added: "The confirmatory examination was carried out using a portable device and it was found that the contamination had spread in several places of the mechanism," stressing the adoption of procedures to seize it in an isolated place and preserve the mechanism, and obtain the approval of the competent judge and customs for the purpose of returning that mechanism to the exporting country.
