The General Assembly elects new members of the UN Security Council

New York - Together - The United Nations General Assembly, at its seventy-eighth session today, Thursday, elected five new countries to non-permanent membership in the Security Council for a two-year period beginning on the first of next year. According to the regular distribution between the regions, Somalia was elected from the African group (replacing the seat currently occupied by Mozambique), while Pakistan was elected from the Asia-Pacific group (which Japan currently holds). Panama was also elected from the Latin American and Caribbean group, which is currently occupied by Ecuador.)
