NEW YORK: The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly kicked off at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, with the participation of President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas. The session, entitled: 'Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,' pursuant to resolution 58/126, addresses a number of issues, most notably: international peace and security, sustainable development and technology. The 79th session of the General Assembly, which opened on Tuesday will continue through Saturday, 28 September, and conclude on Monday, 30 September 2024, with the participation of heads of states and governments of member states of the United Nations. President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to deliver the State of Palestine address to the General Assembly on Thursday, September 26. The current session of the General Assembly witnessed a historic event with the State of Palestine gaining an offi cial seat among the Member States of the General Assembly for the first time during the inaugural session, in implementation of a resolution passed in May. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, addressed on Tuesday the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stating that the level of impunity in the world is politically indefensible and morally intolerable. He stressed that a growing number of governments and others feel entitled to 'get out of jail free" card; 'They can trample international law; they can violate UN charter; they can turn a blind eye to international human rights conventions or the decisions of the international courts,' he stressed. He stressed that the speed and scale of the killing and destruction in Gaza are unlike anything he has witnessed during his years as secretary-general, adding that more than 200 of UN staff, many along with their families, have been killed. He stressed the need for the international community to mobilize its efforts for an immediate ceasefire, and to begin an irreversible process towards a two-state solution.
