Member of the Jordanian Senate, Dr. Bassam Al-Talhouni, on behalf of the Head of the Council Faisal Al-Fayez, opened today, Monday, the 11th Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for the Middle East and North Africa Region, in Amman. The Head of the 10th conference, Head of the Iraqi Red Crescent, Dr. Yassin Abbas, said according to the Jordanian News Agency "Petra", that the region witnessed a serious deterioration in the level of human suffering between the 10th conference in Baghdad in 2018 and the current conference, as the affected groups increased and the geographical area of suffering expanded to include wider areas, whether from natural disasters or armed conflicts, especially with what is happening in the Gaza Strip now. He added that for about a year, the failure to stop what is happening in Gaza has been clear, despite all the attempts and efforts made, which has led to an exacerbation of the humanitarian suffering of civilians in an unprecedented manner since World War II. For his part, the Regional Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross for the Near and Middle East, Eloi Fillon, pointed out that the conference comes at an appropriate time for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the International Movement and partners to reaffirm their solidarity and collective commitment to assist and protect victims of conflicts and other crises affecting many contexts in the region. For her part, the Head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Kate Forbes, stressed that there is much more to be done for the millions of people suffering in the Middle East and North Africa. She recalled the sacrifices of Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers who lost their lives in service, including the loss of 21 staff and volunteers by the Palestine Red Crescent in the past 11 months while performing their duty.
