Ramallah - Ma'an - The lawyer of the Prisoners' Affairs Commission said that the Ofer prison administration is still continuing its fierce campaign against the detainees since October 7, 2023, and has even begun to invent new ways and means to tighten the noose on them and kill them slowly. The Authority's lawyer added, after visiting Ofer prison a few days ago, that there were seven suicide attempts by detainees, due to the poor detention conditions, the brutality of the prison guards, and targeting them with the weapon of starvation and medical neglect. He pointed out that detainees are subjected to beatings during arrest and in prison, especially if they are late for the number and do not wake up at the specified time (four in the morning) every day. He explained that one of the detainees in Ofer was burned while taking a shower, because he was forced to take a shower with very hot water, and he was not treated, noting that the control of the water and its temperature is done by the prison administratio n. He pointed out that the detainee Amr Abu Khalil, a cancer patient, was beaten while being transferred to receive chemotherapy, before he was informed that the treatment session had been cancelled. The detainee Bashir Zaghloul Qassem Khatib from the town of Birzeit was also severely beaten during his arrest and is suffering from weight loss and has lost more than 12 kg of his weight since his arrest on 02/18/2023. The Authority's lawyer pointed out that the detainees suffer from overcrowding, and that there are at least 11 detainees in each room, 5 of whom sleep on the floor, and the rest on iron beds, and they lack the most basic necessities of life, including clothes, blankets, and food.
