Princess Basma Inaugurates Rehabilitated Shelter for Abused Women in Amman

HRH Princess Basma bint Talal inaugurated a rehabilitated shelter for abused women at the Jordanian Women's Union in Amman on Wednesday, following its refurbishment with support from the Norwegian and French embassies, the United Nations, and the African Fund. The shelter is dedicated to victims of domestic violence, offering psychological, legal, and empowerment services. It also includes a section for victims of human trafficking, particularly domestic workers. In her address, Princess Basma emphasized the vital role the shelter plays in providing care, protection, and support to women affected by violence, noting the importance of helping them reintegrate into society. She underscored the shelter's contribution to improving the living conditions and economic prospects of the women and girls who benefit from its services. The princess commended the collaborative efforts between the Jordanian Women's Union, government bodies such as the Ministry of Social Development and the Public Security Department, a s well as civil society organizations and international entities. She stressed the need for concerted action to eradicate domestic violence, highlighting its detrimental social and economic impacts and its negative effect on family cohesion. Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa reiterated the ministry's commitment to combating gender-based violence as part of broader efforts to enhance social protection for women. She emphasized that the fight against such violence is integral to achieving the national objectives of empowering women, as outlined in the government's modernization agenda. French Ambassador Alexis Le Cour Grandmaison expressed his country's ongoing commitment to supporting Jordanian civil society initiatives aimed at addressing domestic violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of victims. He lauded the partnership between France and the Jordanian Women's Union in providing comprehensive care services to victims. Anniken Kleven-Gasser, from the Norwegian Embassy, praised the shelter for its comprehensive support, including psychological counseling, legal assistance, and economic empowerment. She emphasized that the shelter offers hope to women striving for better futures, highlighting Norway's continued commitment to fighting gender-based violence. Nicholas Burnett, UN Women Representative in Jordan, commended Jordan's efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, to advance women's rights, particularly in political and economic spheres. He underscored the significant progress made, including the election of 27 women to the 20th House of Representatives, and reiterated that gender-based violence remains a global issue that requires continued action. Jordanian Women's Union President Kawthar Khlifat highlighted the shelter's achievements since its founding in 1999, stressing its commitment to providing high-quality services to survivors of violence. She acknowledged the essential partnerships between the union, government entities, and international organizations in ensur ing the success of these programs.
