NEW YORK: President Mahmoud Abbas met with Gambian President Adama Barrow today on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During their discussion, President Abbas briefed President Barrow on the ongoing efforts by the Palestinian leadership to halt the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. He emphasized the need for Israeli occupation forces to completely withdraw from Gaza and for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the region. The President underscored the importance of international efforts, particularly through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to ensure that Israel adheres to international law and respects recent UN General Assembly resolutions calling for an end to the occupation. He expressed appreciation for Gambia's support in favor of these resolutions. In response, President Barrow reaffirmed his country's commitment to a two-state solution in accordance with int ernational law, which he had previously highlighted in his address to the General Assembly. He called for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and urged the international community to prioritize support for Gaza's reconstruction once hostilities cease.
