Policy analysis project on short-lived climate pollutant mitigation launched

Amman: Ministry of Environment on Sunday launched a policy analysis project on mitigating short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) in Jordan. In a statement, the ministry said the project, which is implemented by the ministry, in cooperation with the Climate Action Network (CAN), with funding from Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), aims to develop a report that features a policy analysis, launch measures to mitigate risks of SLCP-related pollution, and implement recommendations and suggestions for future national climate policies and plans. The ministry's media advisor, Dr. Ahmed Obeidat, stressed importance of this project, aimed to launch priority SLCP-driven mitigation measures by alanlyzing the current situation and launching a participatory approach, based on the institutional structure specified in Climate Change Regulation No. 79/2019. Obeidat added that this effort comes due to these pollutants' damage on environment globally and their impacts on human health, agriculture, ecosystems and global a nd regional climate. For his part, CAN Director, Fayez Abdullah, stressed importance of this project, which requires need to orchestrate efforts and conduct various consultations to evaluate the current status of SLCP mitigation measures, study available data and open opportunities to enhance action in this field. Meanwhile, Director of the Climate Change Directorate, Bilal Shaqarin, presented the ministry's key achievements and efforts made to draw a road map for climate action in the Kingdom to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. He also called for the concerted efforts in the National Climate Change Policy and efforts made by the relevant partners, which led to modernize Jordan's nationally determined contribution and raising the emissions mitigation rate from 14% to 31% by 2030.
