Toukan added that agreements were signed with the Bank in 2017 and 2018, aiming to improve sewage systems in 17 villages in West Irbid, serving about 200,000 people. The new plant has a total capacity of 12,000 cubic meters per day, in addition to treating wastewater for use in irrigation of agricultural lands surrounding the plant and neighboring lands. The Minister of Planning thanked the EBRD for its support of Jordan's development priorities and for providing funding for this project, lauding the strong partnership and cooperation with the EBRD since 2012. For her part, Harmgart said that the signing of the project would strengthen the relationship between the Jordanian government and the EBRD. "We are proud to support the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in West Irbid to provide sanitation services to households there and in neighboring areas, mitigate the environmental impact associated with the current wastewater disposal system, positively impact the lives of residents, and increase Jordan's resilience in areas hosting affected refugees," Harmgart added. The cumulative investment portfolio of the European Bank in Jordan has grown since 2012 to reach about 2 billion euros, to support public and private sector projects in many areas such as renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, water, municipal infrastructure, solid waste, transportation, tourism and local banks to provide facilities to finance micro, small and medium enterprises, in addition to supporting the private sector, which accounts for 55 percent of the EBRD's financing, as well as technical support and advisory services in many sectors that fall within the priorities of cooperation between Jordan and the EBRD.
