OIC chief reiterates call for Sweden to prevent desecration of Holy Quran

Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hussein Brahim Taha urged Sweden once again to adopt the necessary measures against recurrence of slandering the Holy Quran and other Islamic sanctities under the pretext of freedom of expression.

He apprised Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Tobias Billstrom, in a phone conversation initiated by the latter on Thursday, of the content of the final communique of the emergency meeting held by the OIC executive committee on July 2 in the wake of the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in Sweden.

Taha conveyed to the Swedish minister the resentment of the OIC member states over the recurrence of incidents of misusing the freedom of expression to justify desecration of the Muslims' sanctities, according to a press release from the OIC. He stressed the need of Swedish authorities to prevent such offending malpractices, noting that the OIC foreign ministers council would convene an extraordinary meeting this Monday to discuss this issue. On his part, Billstrom told the OIC chief that his government rejects desecration of any Islamic sanctity, notably the Holy Quran, and seeks to maintain good relations with all Muslim counries, the statement added.
