Sudanese sources announced that the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, survived an assassination attempt by a drone that targeted him this morning, Wednesday, in eastern Sudan. The Sudanese sources told Al Jazeera: A "suicide" drone targeted Al-Burhan while he was participating in a graduation ceremony for students of the Military College at the "Jebet" Military Institute in the Red Sea State in the east of the country, and that Al-Burhan was not injured and was transferred to the city of Port Sudan. Al-Burhan was witnessing the graduation of batches from the Military, Rehabilitation, Air and Naval Colleges at the Infantry Institute Stadium when the first attack of its kind occurred. The Sudanese army issued a statement saying that the air defenses today confronted two hostile drones that targeted the celebration site and that the attack resulted in the death of 5 and the injury of others. The assassination attempt on Al-Burhan comes amid the ongoing conflict since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which, according to a United Nations report, has led to the killing of at least 15,000 people and the displacement of about 10 million people.
