French President Emmanuel Macron warned his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian against providing military support to Russia, and asked him that Tehran use its influence to establish a "general calm" in the Middle East, according to the Elysee Palace. The French presidency said in a statement that during the meeting that brought the two leaders together on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Macron "strongly condemned the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia and warned the Iranian president against the Islamic Republic of Iran continuing to support the aggressive war waged by Russia in Ukraine." The Elysee statement said that during the meeting with Pezeshkian, Macron "highlighted Iran's responsibility to support a general calm and use its influence in this direction with the destabilizing parties that receive its support in order to move towards a ceasefire in Gaza and a cessation of hostilities." The statement indicated that the French president "reaffirmed h is deep concern about the course of the Iranian nuclear program" and "called on Iran to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to work towards a diplomatic solution in this regard." In his speech before the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Pezeshkian stressed that Iran is ready to resume work on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the nuclear agreement) if the parties to this agreement adhere to it. On another level, Macron demanded that his Iranian counterpart release "without delay" the three Frenchmen "who have been arbitrarily held hostage in Iranian prisons for two years," stressing that their freedom "is a prerequisite for any improvement in bilateral relations with France."
