Gaza City: The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, stated on Saturday that the volume of humanitarian aid currently reaching Gaza is vastly disproportionate to the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the besieged territory. In a press statement, Lazzarini warned that famine in Gaza can still be prevented if there is political will.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Lazzarini emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “What we are asking for is not impossible,” and called for the United Nations to be allowed to fulfill its humanitarian mission of delivering aid to those in need while preserving their dignity. He revealed that only 900 aid trucks had entered Gaza over the past two weeks, which covers a mere 10 percent of the population’s daily needs.
Lazzarini stressed that resolving the famine threat requires political action rather than just logistical measures. He urged that UN agencies and humanitarian organizations be permitted to resume their operations in Gaza, following a halt in aid truck deliveries that has been in place since March 2.
He further noted that during the previous ceasefire, UNRWA and other humanitarian groups had successfully brought in 600 to 800 trucks per day, highlighting the feasibility of meeting aid needs if access is granted.
