The Matryoshka doll had always been associated with the concept of family, as the most favorite souvenir for tourists represents the traditional Russian peasant life. Legend has it that wood-turner Vasily Zvyozdochkin was the first to carve out a Matryoshka in the 19th century, while folk painter Sergey Malyutin was the first to add illustrative designs on it. The Matryoshka was presented in the 1900 Paris Exposition, as the all egg-shaped, flat-bottomed dolls consisted of upper and lower sections. The doll's wood is prepared in the spring before being dried for a year or two, then each doll is varnished before the artist starts decorating it using oil and water-based colors. It usually depicts a young woman wearing traditional Russian attire, but recently, landscapes from Russia, mythical figures, and family members, in addition to local and international political figures - are also available, reflecting a broader cultural influence. The Matryoshka's evolution "from simple to symbol" instilled its uniq ue place in Russian heritage, continuing to enchant people around the world with its blend of artistry and tradition.
