Jordan summons Sweden’s envoy over permission to burn Quran

Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said Thursday it summoned Swedish Ambassador in Amman to convey Jordan's firm protest against the Swedish government's permission to burn a copy of Holy Quran in Stockholm last Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry condemned the burning of Quran, saying that burning a copy of the Holy Quran represents dangerous hate and a manifestation of Islamophobia that incites violence Such acts cannot be regarded as an exercise of freedom of expression, it said.

The ministry renewed its rejection to, and condemnation of, these acts, which are regarded as a 'crime and provocation of feelings' of more than two billion Muslims, according to the statement.

The ministry stressed the need of halting such 'provocative and abusive' acts, which represent one of the most heinous forms of hatred.

The ministry further called for respecting religious symbols, promoting a culture of peace and acceptance, and increasing awareness of the values of mutual respect, it noted.

Authorities in Sweden allowed an extremist to stage a protest and burn a copy of the Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm.
