Amman: The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced election of Director-General of Jordan Tourism Board (JTB), Dr. Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, as Chairman of its Board of Affiliate Members. In a statement Wednesday, UNWTO said Arabiyat has demonstrated a "clear" commitment to promote global tourism and implement the "best sustainable and comprehensive" tourism practices. Meanwhile, Arabiyat pledged to work to expand the base of the UNWTO affiliate members, enhance their joint cooperation and consolidate coordination to achieve the board's interests. Arabiyat said: "We will work to provide an exceptional opportunity to cooperate closely with our partners at the international level to enhance position of the tourism sector, increase the number of UNWTO's affiliate members, and enhance spirit of cooperation and innovation within our society, which would enable us to face challenges and seize the available opportunities to ensure a prosperous future for all members." Arabiyat stressed the need to benefit from the collective expertise of the UNWTO affiliate members to address the pressing issues facing the global tourism sector today, including impacts of climate change, noting the need to establish "sustainable" tourism practices and promote recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. "We will strive to achieve our goals of building a more resilient and dynamic tourism industry that benefits local communities and tourists alike," he added. For its part, the JTB expressed its confidence that Arabiyat will lead the UNWTO's board to achieve more important achievements, strengthen partnerships, and advance initiatives that contribute to consolidate the status of global tourism.
