Jordan Applauds UNGA’s Draft Resolution on Endorsing ICJ Ruling on Israeli Occupation

Jordan's has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of a draft resolution on endorsing the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) legal opinion on the consequences of Israel's occupation and policies in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The resolution, passed during the UN's 10th Emergency Special Session, is seen as a decisive move towards holding Israel accountable under international law. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Sufian Qudah described the resolution as a critical step, reinforcing global consensus on the illegality of Israel's ongoing occupation and settlement activities. He emphasized that the resolution reflects widespread international backing for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, and reaffirms the international call for an independent Palestinian state, with borders based on the pre-1967 lines and East Jerusalem as its capital. Qudah noted that the timing of the resolution is particularly significant, coming amid heightened international scrutiny of Israel's war on Gaza and its violations in the West Bank. He urged Israel to comply with international law and called on UN member states to ensure that global resolutions are implemented fairly and consistently, without selective enforcement. He also stressed the urgency of halting Israel's settlement expansion and dismantling its illegal settlements in the occupied territories. Qudah underscored the importance of enforcing UN resolutions concerning Jerusalem's holy sites, reiterating Jordan's ongoing commitment to preserving the historical and legal status of these sites.
