Jerusalem: An Israeli newspaper has reported that the government is attempting to bar Palestinians from the 1948 territories from participating in elections through new legislative measures. The report highlights efforts to enact laws in the Knesset that could potentially exclude this significant segment of the population. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Palestinians of the 1948 occupied territories make up more than 20% of Israel's population. They are currently represented by various parties within the Israeli Knesset and hold leadership roles in municipalities and local councils in Palestinian towns in these territories. Recently, the Knesset approved the first reading of a controversial bill. This proposal, submitted by Oded Forer of the right-wing Israel Beiteinu party along with members of the Likud party, seeks to prevent any candidate or list from participating in municipal elections if their objectives do not include recognizing Israel as a "Jewish state." Haaretz, i n its editorial, described the bill as an effort to limit the rights of Palestinians from the 1948 territories to vote and run in municipal elections. The editorial also noted a parallel proposal aimed at expanding the grounds for excluding parties and candidates from these territories in Knesset elections, as part of an amendment to the Basic Law of the Knesset. A press release from the Knesset indicated that the bill passed a preliminary reading with the support of 36 members of the Knesset (MKs) and the opposition of 10 MKs out of a total of 120 members.
