Israeli airstrike targets school sheltering displaced people, injuring journalists and civilians in Gaza

RAMALLAH: An Israeli airstrike this afternoon targeted a school serving as a shelter for displaced individuals in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, resulting in injuries to several journalists and civilians. One of the injured was Wael al-Dahdouh, a well-known journalist of Al Jazeera and its bureau chief in Gaza. Local sources reported that Wael al-Dahdouh, a correspondent for Al Jazeera and the Gaza bureau chief, sustained injuries to his hand and side during the attack. Additionally, Samer Abu Daqqa, a cameraman for the channel, was injured in the assault on the Khan Yunis Secondary School for Girls. The school has been providing refuge for displaced individuals. The journalists were covering the aftermath of an earlier Israeli airstrike on the school when they came under attack. Notably, both journalists were wearing helmets and protective gear, clearly indicating their status as media personnel. Sources further revealed that several civilians and medical teams were also injured in the Israeli airstrike. Al- Dahdouh was transferred to Nasser Medical Center in Khan Yunis, where his condition was described as moderate. However, cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa remains trapped inside the school, and the severity of his injuries is yet to be determined. The ongoing intensity of Israeli shelling in the area, coupled with communication disruptions, has hindered the arrival of ambulances and medical assistance. It is noteworthy that, on October 25th of the previous year, members of Wael al-Dahdouh's family were killed in an airstrike on their residence in the Nuseirat refugee camp, including his wife, son, daughter, and granddaughter.
