Iraq participated in the meetings of the thirty-fourth session of the States Parties to the Convention on the Law of the Seas and Oceans. The Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kadhem Obaid, delivered Iraq's statement at the meetings of the session held in New York from June 10 to 14, 2024. In it, he praised the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the Law of the Sea and Oceans in light of the challenges we face globally in order to achieve effective sustainability of the contents of the agreement, in which Iraq had the honor of actively participating in its formulation since its early stages, believing that preserving the common and legal benefit of the seas and oceans as a common heritage of humanity. Obeid stressed the importance of promoting common collective interests over the unilateral interests of states according to the principle of sharing damages, benefits and responsibilities. He pointed out the importa nce of facing the challenges of climate change and the environmental threat to the sustainability of the ecosystem and the preservation and protection of the marine environment, taking into account the goals of sustainable development 2030, especially those related to providing food and preserving the environment. He stressed the importance of respecting the rules adopted in the Convention, as well as maintaining the security of the seas and the right of passage, as this plays a major role in maintaining international peace and security. He also commended the efforts of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea as the judicial arm of the Convention, as well as the efforts of the International Seabed Authority. He stressed the importance of providing appropriate training for stakeholders from developing countries to build their capacities and exchange expertise in an appropriate manner, in parallel with efforts to transfer technology to those countries, as this benefits the entire international commu nity.
