International Activists Detained by Israeli Police in Al-Auja Spring Village

Jericho: Israeli occupation police on Wednesday detained several international activists in al-Auja Spring village, north of the occupied West Bank city of Jericho, according to a human rights group. The incident has further intensified tensions in the region, highlighting ongoing issues faced by local communities.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the al-Baidar Organization in Defense of Bedouin Rights reported that Israeli colonists, under the protection of armed police, entered the community. They released cattle between the dwellings and cultivated land, which disrupted the community's livelihood. Local Palestinians and international solidarity activists attempted to drive the cattle out and prevent further damage.

The situation escalated with the arrival of occupation police, leading to the detention of some activists. The actions of the Israeli colonists are described by the organization as part of a systematic policy aimed at forcing the residents, members of the Arab al-Mlaihat clan, to vacate the area.

The Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem (ARIJ) provides context, noting that the Arab al-Mlaihat are originally from the Naqab and were forced to relocate to various areas in the West Bank due to their nomadic lifestyle. In the mid-eighties, they were expelled from the al-Irqa area to Maghair al-Dair, approximately 7 kilometers away, after Israel declared the area a closed military zone.

Violence by colonists against Palestinians and their property is a frequent occurrence in the West Bank, often going unpunished by Israeli authorities. These acts of violence include arson of property and mosques, stone-throwing, uprooting of crops and olive trees, and attacks on vulnerable homes.

The presence of approximately 1 million Israeli colonists in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is considered a violation of international law, further complicating the situation in these regions.
