GFJTU President Discusses Key Labor Issues with ILO Officials

President of the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU), Khaled Fanatseh, engaged in discussions on mutual interests during meetings with Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO), and Maria Helena, Director of the ILO's Bureau for Workers' Activities. The GFJTU issued a statement on Tuesday, detailing these meetings held on the sidelines of the 112th session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva, concluding this week. The GFJTU is participating as part of an official delegation. Fanatseh highlighted the union's current advancements in administrative and union work mechanisms, emphasizing its enhanced national role as a representative body for Jordanian workers. He outlined key points of the union's upcoming action plan and announced that the General Conference, GFJTU's highest authority, will soon hold an extraordinary session to approve new changes in line with democratic principles based on Article 12 of the GFJTU bylaws. He underscored th e union's commitment to activating its frameworks and committees, particularly the Women and Youth Committees, to bolster trade unions' capabilities and performance. This, he noted, will positively impact trade union women in the labor market and working women in general. Fanatseh also revealed plans to address migrant workers' rights by establishing a dedicated section within the GFJTU. Acknowledging that migrant workers often face legal violations, he emphasized the necessity of supporting them. He added that union membership is open to non-Jordanian workers, reflecting the union's commitment to justice and equality regardless of race or nationality. "We will work closely with ILO's Bureau for Workers' Activities to revive joint cooperation benefiting our workers and union members through projects and programs aimed at establishing decent work standards and protecting labor rights," Fanatseh stated.
