Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan participated in the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the "Astana" platform, which also includes Russia and Iran, on Syria in New York. The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated in a post via "X" today, Saturday, that Fidan participated in the meeting, on the sidelines of his participation in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to Turkish diplomatic sources, the meeting was also attended by the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During the meeting, the foreign ministers of the three guarantor countries of the Astana track discussed the security, political and humanitarian situation in Syria. They also called for restraint in the region, especially to prevent Israeli attacks on Lebanon from causing an additional spiral of violence in Syria. The meeting stressed the importance of maintaining calm on the ground in Syria, including Idlib, and the need to prevent attempts by the PKK/ YPG and its armed wing to exploit the current situation. Fidan renewed Turkey's support for revitalizing the political process in Syria, and stressed the importance of the Astana process in ensuring peace and stability in the country. Fidan stressed that the United Nations must play a leading role in resolving the conflict in Syria. The 21st round of the "Astana Track" meetings on the Syrian file was held in January 2024 in the Kazakh capital, Astana, with the attendance of delegations from the guarantor states Turkey, Russia and Iran, in addition to representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition.
