FAO Launches Climate Resilience Project in Northern Refugee-Hosting Areas

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a new project targeting climate change and natural resource challenges in refugee-hosting areas in northern Jordan, with funding from the Japanese government. The initiative, titled "Emergency Response to Climate Change and Natural Resources Crises in Active Refugee Areas in Jordan," was introduced during a workshop organized by FAO in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture. The project will be implemented in the Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees, as well as in Ajloun and Jerash, targeting 150 beneficiaries from refugee and host communities. Japanese Ambassador Okuyama Jiro emphasized the project's focus on disaster risk reduction and forest rehabilitation, highlighting the goal of building stronger, more resilient communities through forest rehabilitation, risk reduction management, and enhanced food security. Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohammad Hiyari, noted the ministry's efforts to adapt to clima te change by implementing smart agriculture projects. FAO Representative in Jordan, Nabil Assaf, added that the project aligns with several sustainable development goals, including food security, sustainable forest management, and biodiversity conservation.
