The European Union (EU) announced on Tuesday new funding of up to 125 million euros for humanitarian aid in Yemen to help the country's population. According to AFP, the European Commission said in a statement, after 9 years of war, more than half of Yemen's population (18.2 million people) needs assistance and protection, noting that the European Union has made a contribution of about 1.5 billion euros to address the Yemeni crisis, including more than one billion euros in humanitarian aid. The Commission explained that the new funds allocated by Brussels "will be channelled exclusively through the EU's humanitarian partners, including UN agencies and non-governmental organizations involved in the actions being implemented." The aid aims to boost "food security and combat malnutrition" and support "health services, demining activities, education programs, and child protection." Some 200 humanitarian organizations, including UN agencies, yesterday launched an urgent appeal for $2.3 billion for Yemen's 2024 humanitarian response plan, warning of "dire consequences" if funding for the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula is not secured.
